Mount with an empty hand until you see hearts
To tame a horse in Minecraft, approach an adult horse with an empty hand and use the mount or interact control. The horse will probably buck you off. Keep mounting it until red hearts appear. The hearts mean it is tamed.
To steer the horse, open its inventory and equip a saddle. Hearts mean yes. Wandering into a tree means you forgot the saddle.
Where to find a horse
Look in plains and savanna biomes. Horses usually appear in small herds, so check more than one before choosing. Coat color is cosmetic; speed, health and jump strength are the traits that change how useful a horse feels.
Plains
Wide sightlines make herds easy to spot, and there is usually enough room for a quick test ride.
Savanna
Search open grass around acacia trees. Bring a lead or fence materials if home is far away.
Foals
Young horses cannot be ridden. Wait for an adult if the goal is transport rather than an extremely cute delay.
How to tame a horse step by step
- Clear your hand. Move the held item to another hotbar slot. Holding food is for feeding; holding a tool is not a persuasive introduction.
- Use or interact with the horse. Your character climbs onto its back.
- Let it throw you off. Do not hit the horse. Walk back and mount it again.
- Repeat until hearts appear. Each attempt has a chance to succeed. Once you see the heart particles, the horse is tamed.
- Equip a saddle. Open the horse inventory while mounted or interacting with it, then put the saddle in its saddle slot.
Taming and controlling are two different jobs
A tamed horse accepts you as its rider, but a saddle gives you directional control. If hearts appeared and the movement controls still do nothing, the tame worked. The saddle is the missing part.
Tamed
Heart particles appeared. The horse accepts you and can be given a saddle or horse armor.
Controllable
The tamed horse has a saddle equipped. Now your movement controls steer it.
You can craft a saddle at a crafting table with 3 leather and 1 iron ingot in Java 1.21.6 and later, including Java 26.3. Mojang's current Bedrock 26.50 recipe data uses the same ingredients. Older guides that send you dungeon hunting for every saddle are out of date.
Should you feed the horse first?
You do not need to. Feeding certain foods raises the horse's temper, which makes the next taming attempts more likely to succeed. Sugar is a cheap option if sugar cane is already in your inventory. Apples, wheat and golden foods can also help, though repeated empty-hand attempts cost nothing.
Test the horse before building it a palace
Horses vary in health, speed and jump strength. Two horses that look identical can ride very differently. Once saddled, try a short flat sprint and jump over one-block, then two-block obstacles. The best-looking horse is not automatically the best commuter.
| Trait | Simple test | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Race a fixed path | Long trips and exploration |
| Jump | Try marked walls | Fences, hills and rough ground |
| Health | Count the horse hearts | Surviving falls and fights |
Why horse taming is not working
You keep feeding instead of mounting
Switch to an empty hand, then interact with the adult horse.
The horse is tamed but will not steer
Equip a saddle. Taming alone does not give directional control.
You missed the hearts
Open the horse inventory. If it accepts equipment and stays rideable, the tame probably succeeded.
You are trying to ride a foal
Foals cannot be ridden. Wait until it grows into an adult.
Minecraft horse questions
How many times does it take to tame a horse?
There is no fixed number. Each horse has a temper value, so one may tame quickly while another needs several attempts. Food can improve the odds.
Do you need a saddle to tame a horse?
No. Tame it by repeatedly mounting with an empty hand. You need the saddle afterward to control where it goes.
Can you tame a horse with an apple?
An apple can make taming easier, but it is not the taming action. You still need to mount the horse until hearts appear.
Is horse taming the same in Java and Bedrock?
The core loop is the same. Use an empty hand, mount repeatedly, wait for hearts, then equip a saddle. The button used for interact and inventory depends on your device.
Give the new horse a banner worth coming home to
Build a stable marker, check the dye list and follow the loom order without guessing.
