Three sugar cane make three paper
To make paper in Minecraft, place 3 sugar cane in a single horizontal row of a crafting table. The recipe gives you 3 paper. Any row works, but the cane must be side by side.
You need a crafting table because the personal inventory grid is only two blocks wide. It is not a sugar problem. It is a furniture problem.
The Minecraft paper recipe
- Open a crafting table. The 3 by 3 grid has room for the full row.
- Place three sugar cane side by side. Use the top, middle or bottom row.
- Collect three paper. One cane becomes one paper, so the same count works for farming and crafting.
Where to get sugar cane
Sugar cane grows beside water on dirt, grass, sand and similar blocks. Walk along rivers, beaches and lake edges and look for tall green stalks. Break the upper sections and leave the bottom block standing if you want it to regrow.
Good habit
Replant a row near your base with water beside each planting block. Harvest above the bottom cane.
Common mix-up
Bamboo is tall and green too, but it does not make vanilla paper. The crafting table is picky about botany.
You can also find paper in some shipwreck, stronghold and village cartographer chests, according to Mojang's official Paper guide. Loot is handy for one map; a small sugar cane patch is better for an enchanting setup.
What paper is used for in Minecraft
Books
Combine 3 paper with 1 leather to make a book. Books lead to bookshelves, enchanting tables and written books.
Maps
Surround 1 compass with 8 paper at a crafting table. Java calls the result an empty map. Bedrock calls it an empty locator map because it includes the player marker; Bedrock also has a plain map without that marker.
Firework rockets
Combine 1 paper with 1, 2 or 3 gunpowder to make 3 rockets. More gunpowder increases flight duration. Add a firework star for an explosion effect; leave it out for routine Elytra boosts.
Paper also appears in cartography recipes and banner pattern crafting. In Java Edition 26.1 and later, 1 paper plus any metal nugget makes a name tag. That small update makes a sugar cane patch useful even before you start enchanting.
If the banner pattern is what you are after, the AvaKraft Minecraft banner maker tells you which reusable pattern item a design needs and the order to use it in the loom.
How much paper for 15 bookshelves?
A full level 30 enchanting setup uses 15 bookshelves. Each bookshelf needs 3 books, and each book needs 3 paper. Here is the complete shopping list.
In total, that is 135 paper, 45 leather and 90 planks. The paper is straightforward because 135 sugar cane becomes 135 paper. The leather is usually the part that turns a quick crafting plan into livestock management.
Why the paper recipe is not working
You used the inventory grid
Open a crafting table. A two-wide inventory grid cannot hold the three-cane row.
The cane is vertical
Move all three pieces into one horizontal row.
You used bamboo
Vanilla Minecraft paper uses sugar cane, not bamboo or wood.
You expected books
The paper recipe only makes paper. Add 1 leather to 3 paper to craft a book.
Minecraft paper questions
Can you make paper without sugar cane?
There is no other vanilla crafting ingredient for paper. You can find paper in certain loot chests or trade-related locations, but the recipe uses sugar cane.
Can you make paper from bamboo or wood?
No in vanilla Java or Bedrock Edition. Mods and custom servers may add recipes, but the standard recipe is three sugar cane in a horizontal row.
How much paper does three sugar cane make?
Three sugar cane make three paper.
Is the paper recipe the same in Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Both editions use three sugar cane in one horizontal row to make three paper.
Turn that paper into a banner plan
Choose the design first, then gather only the dyes and pattern items you actually need.
